About PDCN

Privacy Statement

Welcome to Issue No: 36 of THE PDCN BULLETIN, our topical issues newsletter and information source for opinion formers, decision-makers and others interested in disability sector topics. The bulletin is produced by the Physical Disability Council of New South Wales (PDCN). We are the peak body representing people with physical disability across the State.

Our aim is to provide readers with accurate, up-to-date and timely information, comment and analysis of disability sector issues from the perspective of people with physical disability in NSW, including children with disability and their representatives. This Bulletin goes out to PDCN members and others who wish to receive it regularly by email.

As part of his resource development role, Craig has taken on the job of putting out this electronic bulletin every two weeks. Ideally this will be a short, easy to read update on the Council's current work - and should only take less than five minutes to read through. Internet links will be included through the bulletin for further reading if you're so inclined to read more on the various issues.

You are welcome to forward this bulletin to anyone you know would welcome it.

3. Hospitalisation of people with disabilities

Robyn attended a consultation with the NSW Dept Health reviewing the implementation (or not!) of their hospitalisation of people with disabilities policy. The consultation developed a range of suggestions to improve the hopsital experience for people with disabilities.

For example, the transfer of information from hospital dept. to hospital dept; the need to understand the medical condition may have nothing to do with the disability; and the need for appropriate discharge planning.

3. Words Matter — A Guide for Journalists

Lachlan, our Media Officer has published "Words Matter — A Guide for Journalists" as a PDCN publication.

The power of words and images to reflect and shape community perceptions of people with a disability is widely acknowledged. This moulding of perceptions and attitudes through language and images is an ongoing and dynamic process.

Appropriate descriptive language and the avoidance of stereotypes will foster positive social change. It represents an important responsibility and a significant challenge to all involved . particularly those who engage in developing public communications: our journalists, reporters, photographers and camera operators.

The language guidance in this document is particular to the Australian experience.

10. Advocacy Network

Following the two pilot training days for people wanting to support those engaging in self-advocacy - one in Dubbo and one in Coffs Harbour - John surveyed the participants and their feedback is being used as a guide for the future of this program.

Future training will most likely consist of two, two or three hour sessions on consecutive days. In addition, John is now reworking the training workbook so it can be used as a self-paced learning manual.

The revised workbook will be distributed on CD to people who attend the training.

We are planning to hold training in the Illawarra and Goulburn in late May or early June. Proposed dates are Wollongong on 17 and 18 May - and Goulburn on 14 and 15 June.

It is expected that each trip will involve the two short training sessions and a public consultation.

People interested in attending the training should email John (admin@pdcnsw.org.au).
