Step in the right direction for Wheelchair Accessible Taxi users

The Physical Disability Council of NSW (PDCN) congratulates the Ministry of Transport and Transport Minister John Watkins for taking action that assists wheelchair users in accessing taxis.

PDCN welcomes the news that from December 1 Wheelchair Accessible Taxi drivers in NSW will get a $7.70 bonus for every wheelchair user they carry in their taxi.

The trial, funded by the Taxi Advisory Committee Fund at no cost to passengers, acknowledges the difficulty wheelchair users face in attempting to access Wheelchair Accessible Taxis

PDCN continues to advocate for a long term solution for people with physical disabilities in NSW. PDCN supports the implementation of a universal accessible taxi fleet, replacing the existing fleet with WAT's as they age.

Accessible transport is essential if people with physical disabilities are to enjoy independent and productive lives. For many people with physical disabilities Wheelchair Accessible Taxis are the only transport option. This incentive is a step in the right direction.
