New supported accommodation opens for people with a disability
23 August 2007

NSW — NSW Minister for Disability Services, Kristina Keneally, officially opened new supported accommodation for five people with a disability at Terranora today.

Ms Keneally said the Iemma Government has invested more than $1 million to purchase, modify and fit-out the new home.

“House With No Steps will also receive additional funding of $400,000 a year to provide support and services at the new Terranora facility,” Ms Keneally said.

“The Tweed local government area is a high-growth area with a rapidly ageing population and it is a priority area for additional support services for people with a disability and their families.

“This new group home at Terranora will cater for adults and young people who are a high priority for accommodation support.

“This is another example of the Iemma Government meeting it’s commitment to improve services for people with a disability, their families and carers.

“These five new places are part of an additional 73 places recently allocated state-wide under our 10 year, $1.3 billion plan Stronger Together.

“Stronger Together details how we will provide greater assistance and long-term practical solutions for people with a disability.

“There are currently more than 8,500 supported accommodation and intensive in-home support packages provided throughout NSW for people with a disability.

“A further 1,400 will be provided during the first five years of Stronger Together,” she said.

House With No Steps has also recently received $346,000 through a separate tender process for new centre-based and flexible respite places for adults on the Far North Coast.

Ms Keneally said Group homes like these provide supported accommodation in a community setting for people with an intellectual disability who can not live independently or with their family.

“These supported environments also make it easier for people to access the services they need to allow them to participate in the community,” Ms Keneally said.
