Where's the decency? Problems
with the Mobility Parking Scheme
continue
|
|
|
The situation of
Jennifer Kellaway as described by The Sydney
Morning Herald this morning, highlights the
ongoing issues within the Mobility Parking
Scheme, and the lack of progress made by the RTA
since February 20th 2006, when it put forward
and discussed potential solutions to those
issues, with peak disability organizations.
Although it has been pleasing to see an increase
in the fine for abuse of the scheme and the
covert policing operations of Sydney City and
North Sydney Councils, little progress has been
made.
The Physical Disability
Council of NSW calls upon the Iemma Government,
through the RTA to immediately improve the MPS
by:
- Recognising the
permanent nature of many disabilities by
asking for a "once only" medical proof of
disability
- Linking the renewal
of a driver's licence with the renewal of
an MPA, for the majority of MPA holders
who also hold a NSW Driver's
Licence
- Redefining "unable
to walk" so as to enable those who choose
or are able to walk but who have life-long
or permanent disabilities such as MS,
Cerebral Palsy, Bi-lateral lower limb
amputations and whose ability to walk will
vary from time to time have access to the
scheme.
