NSW Stanley
talks about the number of cars parked in Sydney with the
disabled parking stickers. Stanley says that the RTA has
decided following discussions with the physical
disability council that there will be no change to the
system or extra restrictions. Stanley says the RTA has
today decided to revisit the issue. Stanley introduces
John Moxon from the NSW Physical Disability Council to
the program.
Stanley asks Moxon what numbers of
people are committing fraud in the city. Moxon says a
large percentage of people parked on the street. Moxon
adds that the RTA are going to continue with current
arrangements because it's expensive and difficult to park
in Sydney and says it is less effective for disabled
people to use public transport in Sydney.
Moxon says that there need to be
better identification requirements and more stringent
testing for doctors giving out certificates to get
permits. Stanley says that cases of fraud with doctors
are submitted to the medical board and there were only 11
referred to the board.
Moxon says that whilst only 11 were
reported to the board over 100 had letters sent to them
by the RTA. Moxon says around 1,000 permits are being
issued by the RTA a week but says he doesn't think this
number will remain the same.
Moxon says around 1,000
infringements have been issued in the last year who
parked in a disabled spot without a permit and adds that
this isn't their main issue and adds that they're more
concerned about the care of the people with disabilities.
Moxon says there isn't enough money for services and
support for disabled people.
