Where's the Common Decency: Parking on Principle

"Outrageous" is the only word to describe the abuse of the 'improved' Mobility Parking Scheme, Physical Disability Council of NSW (PDCN) Vice President John Moxon stated in the Sydney Morning Herald.

The permit which currently incorporates a non-compulsory photo ID has reduced the number of permits by 25%, yet almost 1000 permits are issued every week. That's 13% of all vehicles. The numbers do not add up.

Certainly, more can be done to ensure that permits are issued to those who need them.

More needs to be done to ensure that parking permits are being used by those who are entitled to use them.

It is not always possible to tell by looking at someone, the way they walk, or the car they drive whether they are entitled to a permit or not.

"The State Government is not interested in policing it. It doesn't operate the parking meters, so it doesn't lose revenue", said Mr. Moxon

The State Government needs to:

  • Audit the giving of medical certificates
  • Tighten the elegibility criteria
  • Set significant fines for abuse
  • Local Government needs to police parking places and challenge those apparently parking illegally - then fine them.
