Employment Figures for Disabled Drop
22 February 2005

APSIC — Since 1995 there has been a steady decline in the employment of people with a disability from 5.8% to 3.8%, according to the Aust Public Services Cmn report. High dissatisfaction rates of people with a disability and the failure of targeted recruitment campaigns to deliver results indicated numbers would continue to fall, the report said.

Workforce diversity is an issue of growing importance because of the demographic trends, the cmn said.

"To make the most of a diverse workforce, to address issues associated with the ageing of the APS workforce, and to ensure that employment disadvantage is eliminated for relevant groups, agencies need to engage in systematic diversity planning that is integrated with their broader workforce planning."

The only good news was the number of women employed continues to rise and, "more importantly, the proportion of women employed at senior levels is continuing to increase steadily". NESB rates have remained stable.
