PDCA Day of Action
12 September 2003

PDCA is once again hosting a National Action Day on Thursday 25th September. The focus this year will be 'Access to Healthcare' and will highlight the lack of equal access to healthcare facilities, services, buildings, equipment, and professional services.

People with disabilities are being asked to highlight areas in their own lives where they are prevented from accessing health care. This will encompass dentists, doctors, specialists, physiotherapists, natural therapists and other health care professionals and covers, access, equipment, attitudes, toilets, etc In other words anything that prevents you as a person with a disability (or carer of..) from receiving healthcare.

Please note: We are not asking you to approach health professionals either in person or by phone as other peoples version of accessible is different to that of the person that needs access. Rather we want you to simply fill in the forms from your own perspective rather than that of someone without disability.

Once this information is gathered PDCA will follow this up by:

  • Writing to all Ministers of Health (in all states and territories)
  • Writing to all Medical Associations
  • Writing to Dental Associations
  • Writing to Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapy and Dietician Associations
  • Writing to the AMA and the State/Territory counterparts

In this letter, we will point out that under the DDA health and other professionals are obliged as public practitioners to provide for people with disability and as the 'snapshot' of our Action Day indicates, this is not happening and this impacts on the healthcare of people with disability.
