People with disabilities carrying More Costs, Inquiry hears
4 August 2003

A Senate inquiry into poverty has been told that people with disabilities are being forced to shoulder greater financial costs.

Physical Disability Council of Australia spokeswoman Sue Egan says governments are overlooking such significant costs as transport to work and training.

Ms Egan has told a public hearing in Brisbane while the issue has been around for at least 15 years, there is still no real understanding or support.

"If you're really passionate or honest about wanting people with disabilities to work, then you've got to have the support system then to enable them to do that," Ms Egan said.

"You've also got to accept that yes, there is a cost."
