Person centred Approaches: Living Life My Way
A Message from The NSW Government
The NSW Government is committed to making the second phase of Stronger Together even more effective for people with a disability, their families and carers. The priority is to deliver client directed supports and funding arrangements. This means reforming the service system to give people control over their own lives.
Living Life My Way Consultations Update
15 May 2012
The NSW Government is conducting a 12 month statewide consultation process to seek the views of people with a disability, their families, carers, service providers and advocacy agencies on a person centred disability system.
A total of 78 consultation sessions are occurring across NSW from 7 May and 29 June 2012 to provide people with a disability, their families, carers, service providers and advocacy agencies an opportunity to comment on options for a person centred disability system. A discussion paper has been developed to guide consultations drawing on feedback from the previous round of consultations held in 2011.
The NSW Government wants to ensure that people with a disability, their family members and carers have an opportunity to provide feedback on the implementation of a person centred disability system. There are still places available at many of the consultation sessions, Ageing Disability and Home Care is seeking your assistance in promoting the consultations and distributing the fact sheets throughout your organisation, networks and forums to people with a disability, their families and carers.
To provide information to stakeholders on the consultation process one fact sheet has been developed for people with a disability, families and carers and another for service providers, advocates and other stakeholders.

What is a person centred approach?
A person centred system places the person with a disability at the centre of decision making when it comes to the supports and services they use. In a person centred system, the rights of people with a disability, and their families and carers to make choices about their own lives are respected. A person with a disability, their families and carers are heard and supported to exercise choice and to direct supports and service arrangements.

Vision for a person centred disability system
The Government's vision for a person centred system in NSW is one in which:
- individuals are supported to achieve their full potential and participate in their communities and the economy
- families and carers are supported to sustain a care relationship and pursue their own goals
- a diverse and sustainable service sector provides person centred supports and services in cost effective ways
We are consulting widely
The Government will lead a series of extensive consultations on the best way to implement client directed supports and funding arrangements. The consultations will be launched with a two day summit on person centred approaches on 7 and 8 July 2011 at Acer Arena, Homebush.
Participants will include people with a disability, their families and carers, non-government service providers, peak bodies and advocacy organisations and government agencies.
In the second half of 2011, more than 100 independently facilitated consultations will be held throughout NSW with people with a disability, their families and carers. There will also be workshops with service providers and other stakeholders.
Anyone will be able to contribute submissions to the process.
The Government is seeking a greater understanding of the needs of people with a disability in the community. This will help to build a disability service system in NSW that puts decision making control, choice and flexibility for people with a disability at the centre of their support plan.
