Exhibition for artists with disability escalates to next level
AART.BOXX is an exhibition of works by emerging artists and creative thinkers with disability. In 2009, AART.BOXX has expanded to include works by artists of all ages from around the country. Printmaker and sculptor Scott Trevelyan comes from NSW's North Coast. In 2002, while half way through a visual arts degree at Southern Cross University, Trevelyan was in a life-changing accident.
"I was riding through the hills behind Byron Bay NSW when I crashed my beloved Ducati in a high speed accident that left me with eight broken vertebrae, a couple of broken ribs, a punctured lung, a dislocated femur, a broken shoulder and a traumatic brain injury."
Trevelyan was in a coma for a week. After spending a year teaching himself to walk again and learning to overcome the severe fatigue resulting from his Acquired Brain Injury (ABI), Trevelyan built a wheelchair accessible studio on his property in Alstonvale.
Trevelyan is one of 24 artists from around Australia chosen to feature in the AART.BOXX 09 exhibition.
Now in its fourth year, Accessible Arts’ AART.BOXX project has grown into an exhibition of national significance that provides a creative platform for artists with disability.
For the first time in 2009, AART.BOXX will also feature two Auslan-interpreted Conversations With The Artists events, in which featured artists will discuss their creative processes and share ideas.
