HREOC (pronounced
sometimes as 'hair-e-ock' or 'har-e-ock') is short
for the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity
Commission
HREOC was established in
1986 by an act of the Federal Parliament as an
independent statutory organisation reporting to the
federal Parliament through the
Attorney-General.
HREOC with a goal to
foster greater understanding and protection of
human rights in Australia and to address the human
rights concerns of a broad range of individuals and
groups.
HREOC is managed by a body
made up of a President and five Commissioners. The
five positions are currently held by three people.
The President is the chief executive officer. The
five positions are;
- Sex Discrimination
Commissioner
- Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander Social Justice
Commissioner
- Human Rights
Commissioner
- Race Discrimination
Commissioner
- Disability Discrimination
Commissioner
The last two positions are
still covered by acting-Commissioners and yet to be
appointed.
