PDCA
National Action Day of Action
is to be held on
Wednesday September 25th where people are being
encouraged to target illegal parking in Accessible
Parking Bays.
This issue has been raised
many times and continually frustrates people with
disabilities who drive cars or are passengers in
cars.
Facts:
- The
spaces are strategically placed (usually) so
that distance to entry/exit is the easiest and
shortest route
- The
spaces are wider because people need the space
for walking frames, wheelchairs, assistance etc
- The
spaces are marked so that a permit by an issuing
authority should be displayed in the window of
the vehicle.
- People
can and do abuse people with disabilities who
challenge someone parking illegally
- The
spaces are the most frequently used in any
place, any time, any part of Australia
- There is
no one group of people that abuse this system
more than any other
- These
spaces are not policed or monitored as they
should be
- The fines
if any, are not a deterrent, or do not exist at
all.
- The
system is abused by all and sundry with no
thought for the needs of people with
disabilities
Myths:
- It is special
treatment or a perk
- Placing parking bays with
the access sign is enough to encourage the
public to adhere
- Spaces are policed by
authorities who place them in their car parks or
streets
- There are plenty of
parking spaces provided for people with
disabilities
- People face heavy fines
if they abuse this system
- People are not ruthless
and unthinking and will leave these spaces for
people with disabilities
Want to do
something about this?
PDCA is asking people to
participate in our Action Day, by down loading one
of our Day of Action forms and spending some time
at your local shopping centre, business district,
university, public parking area etc and observing
how many people you think do not have the right to
park in the designated space and who do not display
the correct permit.
The form should be filled out
with the information asked for, and returned
to:
PDCA,
PO Box 77 Northgate,
Qld 4013.
We will then compile
all the responses and start the campaign of
informing Transport authorities, councils etc how
many abuses there were on a given day in Australia.
In other words a snapshot of how little
notice is being taken of this important resource
for people with disabilities.
We will challenge the
myth that this is a system that works in
Australia.
We will inform the
authorities of how many people with
disabilities use this system (with the
facts).
We will campaign in the
media so that people begin to see the
importance of these spaces in the inclusion of
people with disabilities in our society.
